Formed in 1978 by vocalist Jarvis Cocker, the band was original known as Arabacus Pulp. The English pop group went through numerous incarnations in the '80s, and has had 24 members since. Pulp's music was in the tradition of Bowie-esque synth-pop and it captured the attention of a youth starved of this type of music. The band earned positive reviews and a Top 10 album with "His 'n' Hers" The following year, the Sheffield band confirmed its status as pop stars with the album "Different Class", which went straight to number one.
