Placebo is a "new" group coming from the UK. Punk-pop band Placebo released their self-titled album debut for Caroline Records in 1996, after touring with the Sex Pistols and Weezer, and being featured on the covers of both NME and Melody Maker. Although they aren't really "new", they came out w/ their first cd around 1996... The band is fronted by Brian Molko's beautiful voice, bass and guitar playing, along w/ Stefan Olsdal who is on bass, guitar, and keyboard, and Steven Hewitt on drums... They have hit the top charts in UK and are breaking their way thru the country w/ a storm! You may know them by the "weed song" (Pure Morning), or may have seen Brian and Steve on Velvet Goldmine. Their sound is gothy, punk w/ a touch of pop and sparkle. Placebo is definatlly in a league of their own!
"The first album was a very sexual record," says Molko, "packed full of youthful vigor and lust. The new album is introverted, more of a post-coital depression: the comedown. It deals with an ever-pervading heartbreak and loneliness that seems to be in the air. The morning after is usually more analytical than the night before, and it's often more painful."
"There's two years between the two albums, and there's been a hell of a lot of living going on during that time," admits Molko. "In many ways it feels like a different band. This is our first album with Steve on drums, and the band dynamic has changed. It can seem a bit schizophrenic, but we're just trying to take it as far as possible in each direction: stretch it, and aim for a wider scope."
