For many, The Living End seemed to just suddenly appear out of nowhere in early 1998. All of a sudden this bunch of musical brats were dominating Australian airwaves and charts. Of course, as with all so called "overnight successes" there is always a history behind them. The Living End was first formed in 1994 when school friends Chris and Scott decided to get a band together. Self-managed and highly motivated, The Living End started getting gigs around Melbourne. A lot of drive and some luck thrown in found The Living End supporting Green Day on a national tour back in February 1996. At the same time they released their debut EP, the eight tracked Hellbound, which got great attention from community radio nationally. Things had really started to bubble.
By November of that same year they had headed into the studio once again to record another EP, It’s For Your Own Good. The EP gave The Living End their first national radio attention with the Triple J hit From Here On In. Appearances at Pushover, The Falls Festival and their own club shows, coupled with loads of airplay and great reviews brought The Living End to a wider audience.
The Living End toured throughout 1997, a year which would prove to be a turning point in the band’s career. It was in late 1997 that The Living End were offered a national support slot with Bodyjar. It had been a year since It’s For Your Own Good had come out and so the band decided to duck quickly into the studio to record a few tracks to sell on the road. The end result was the Second Solution/Prisoner Of Society single.
By early 1998 Prisoner Of Society had become a national hit, nestling itself in the Top 5 and reaching platinum status (the single is now double platinum). In between touring commitments, The Living End headed into Sing Sing Studio in Melbourne with Lindsay Gravina to record their debut album. The result of these sessions is the 14 tracked self titled debut album.
In July of this year The Living End headed to the US to join the Warped Tour for 10 shows and play a few gigs in LA. While they were there they headed into the studio again, this time to mix the album. For this they enlisted the help of veteran mixer Jerry Finn, to give the album a bit of spit and polish. Once they returned to Australia the band then set their minds to creating the artwork for the album.
The end result? 14 tracks of pop/rock/punk with a small dash of ska. The Living End have always delivered quality songs with more hooks than a fishing boat. Their self titled debut album is no exception.
