Bloodhound Gang
A non-traditionalist modern rock act, the Bloodhound Gang made its debut in 1994 with the Use Your Fingers EP, released on the Cheese Factory independent. It was later licensed to Columbia Records. Despite such good portents, sales were slow, and the group soon returned to Cheese Factory (now renamed Republic Records ). However, when their 1996 single, "Fire Water Burn", began to attract regular airplay on rock stations, the group found itself moving to a major, Geffen Records, once again. Their debut album was reissued in amended form as One Fierce Beer Coaster, and immediately made an impact on the US Top 100. Republic maintained their interest in the group, however, with Brett Alperowitz becoming their manager. The follow-up to eFire Water Burni, eWhyis Everybody Always Pickini On Mei, was promoted with the aid of a video featuring John Denver. The debut album, meanwhile, attested to the Bloodhound Gangis acknowledged versatility. As singer Jimmy Pop Ali (b. James Franks) admitted to Billboard magazine, the contents were informed by influences as diverse as the Wu-Tang Clan, Depeche Mode and Weezer. However, lyrically Pop Ali could claim to be unique. Song titles on One Fierce Beer Coaster included "Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny" and "I Wish I Was Queer So I Could Get Chicks".
