Robert Miles

Roberto Concina (aka Roberto Milani). Miles was born to Italian parents in Fluerier, Switzerland, in 1969 and later moved to Italy. As a child he learned the piano and began DJing when he was 13. Four years later he took his first job at a local club, around the same time as he set up a pirate radio station. After a few years he was playing at various clubs throughout northern Italy and by the time he was 22 he had become one of the most successful broadcasters in the region on account of his show on Radio Supernetwork. He subsequently invested in a studio to concentrate on writing his own material, while continuing to DJ at clubs and parties. After a number of minor successes in Italy he achieved widespread success with his single 'Children' (1996), which was initially signed to Platypus Records in the UK from the Italian independent DBX, before being picked up by Deconstruction Records. Inspired by the sounds he had heard while DJing in Goa, Ibiza, Bali and other such places, while aiming to create a contrast to the hard techno which was popular in Italy at the same, 'Children' created a rather sickening ethereal atmosphere, blending a basic trance sound with live instruments including strings, guitar and its famous piano hook. With its commercial melodic sound it was extremely successful, particularly in Europe and the UK (number 2) and brought Miles' name into the mainstream. The Top 10 follow-ups 'Fable' and 'One & One' (featuring Maria Nayler), and debut album Dreamland, were equally popular and lead to Miles winning various industry awards, including the Brits' Best International Newcomer and the World Music's Highest-Selling Male Newcomer. In 1997 he released the single 'Freedom' and a second album 23am which extended his sound to incorporate breakbeats and elements of drum 'n' bass as well as vocalists and jazz musicians. In the same year he mixed one side of the compilation London for the 'superclub' Renaissance. He has remained a popular DJ throughout Europe.
